Shani Shingnapur Temple Timings, Aarti and Darshan Rules

Published

Shani Shingnapur temple opens at 4:00 AM and closes at 10:30 PM. Aarti is held three times a day: at 4:30 AM, at 12:00 noon and at sunset. Early morning is the best time to go, for the oil abhishek and the shortest queues.

The temple, Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan, is in Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar) district. Here is what to know about the timings, the rules near the idol and how to plan the day.

Shani Shingnapur timings and aarti time

TimeWhat happens
4:00 AMTemple opens
4:30 AMMorning aarti
12:00 noonMidday aarti
SunsetEvening aarti
10:30 PMTemple closes

The evening aarti follows sunset, so its clock time moves through the year. If you want to be there for it, check the local sunset time for your date.

What darshan here is like

The swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Shani Dev stands in the open. There is no roof, no walls and no door around it. You reach it on foot, across an open platform with no shade.

That open platform is the main thing to plan for. The distance is short. Midday heat is the main difficulty, more than distance. Going early in the morning avoids most of it.

The village itself is known for houses built without door locks, a tradition tied to Shani Dev’s protection.

Darshan rules: dress and photography

Dress. Traditional attire is expected for the platform ritual. Men have historically been required to wear a dhoti to approach the idol directly. These rules have changed over the years, so it is safest to wear traditional clothes. Our drivers tell you what applies on the day you visit.

Photography. Photography is restricted around the idol platform. Follow the posted signs and what the temple staff tell you.

Passes and queues. Free darshan in the general queue is always open. We are a cab service with no link to any temple trust, so we cannot arrange passes, poojas or a quicker place in the line.

When it is most crowded

  • Saturday, Shani Dev’s day, is consistently busier than other days of the week.
  • Shani Amavasya and Shani Jayanti draw the largest gatherings of the year.
  • On ordinary days, the crowd builds by mid-morning.

If you are coming on a Saturday or a festival day, expect a longer wait and allow extra time in your plan.

How long to keep for the visit

On our trips we keep about 90 minutes at Shani Shingnapur. That includes the walk from the parking area, darshan and the walk back.

Shani Shingnapur and Shirdi in one day

Most families from Pune combine Shani Shingnapur with Shri Sai Baba’s samadhi mandir at Shirdi. The two are about 80 km apart.

On our Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur day trip from Pune, the plan runs like this:

TimeStop
5:30 AMPickup from your home in Pune
9:30 AMDarshan at Shani Shingnapur
11:15 AMDrive on to Shirdi
12:45 PMShri Sai Baba samadhi darshan
5:30 PMLeave Shirdi for Pune
9:30 PMDrop at home in Pune

We go to Shani Shingnapur first by default, because its morning queue is short. That leaves the middle of the day for Shirdi, where the queue is harder to predict. It can take anything from 45 minutes to more than three hours.

You can reverse the order if you prefer. Going to Shirdi first makes sense if you want to attend the Madhyan (noon) aarti there. The Kakad aarti at Shirdi is at 5:15 AM, which cannot be reached in time from Pune. If you visit Shirdi first, you reach Shani Shingnapur later, in the afternoon.

A few things to know for the Shirdi half of the day:

  • Phones and cameras are not allowed in the samadhi mandir. You leave them at deposit counters outside the complex, which takes a little time going in and coming out.
  • Thursday is Shri Sai Baba’s day, and the wait can go past three hours. Your drop in Pune is later on Thursdays and festival days.
  • For paid passes at Shirdi, book yourself on the Sansthan Trust website, online.sai.org.in.
  • Wheelchairs and a separate queue for senior citizens are available at Shirdi.

Is it a hard day for elderly parents?

It can be done, but it is long. You leave at 5:30 AM, get back at about 9:30 PM, and close to eight hours of that is driving. At Shani Shingnapur the walk is short, over the open platform. If someone in your group tires quickly, the same route works with a night’s halt. Ask us for a two-day quote, which includes the driver’s halt charge. Your hotel is booked by you.

Plan your visit

Shani Shingnapur is open from 4:00 AM to 10:30 PM, and the morning is the easiest time for darshan. If you would like a car and driver for the day, see the Shirdi Shani Shingnapur tour package from Pune. Fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s allowance are in one fixed fare.
