Is Bhimashankar Temple Open? Timings and What to Check Before You Go

Published

The honest answer is that you should check with the temple trust before you travel. Bhimashankar’s hours have changed more than once in 2026, and the trust’s website, shreebhimashankar.com, still shows a notice about restricted timings from the 2026 construction work. Before you set out, phone the trust on 02135 222 880. We will not tell you the temple is open or closed today, because we cannot know that from here.

What follows is the usual schedule from our own temple notes, how darshan booking works now, and the practical things our drivers tell families before the trip.

Bhimashankar temple timings

These are the regular hours we keep on record. Treat them as a starting point and confirm them with the trust, since the hours this year have not stayed fixed.

TimeWhat happens
5:00 AMTemple opens, morning puja
2:45 PMAfternoon puja
7:30 PMEvening aarti
9:30 PMTemple closes

If you are driving up from Pune for a morning darshan, a 5:30 AM start gets you to the temple at about 8:30 AM. That is the plan on our one-day Bhimashankar trip from Pune.

What to check before you leave home

  1. Phone the trust on 02135 222 880. Ask whether the temple is open for darshan on your date and what the hours are. This one call matters more than anything you read online, including this page.
  2. Look at shreebhimashankar.com. It is the trust’s official website, and it is where the notice about restricted timings is posted.
  3. Check the day of the week. Mondays are much busier than other days. So are the Mondays of Shravan and Mahashivratri. Plan your time at the temple around that.
  4. Check the weather on the ghat. Heavy monsoon rain slows the last stretch of road, and fog is common on the hill for much of the year.

Do you need to book darshan online?

No. In 2026 the trust dropped compulsory booking after devotees ran into technical problems with it. Since June 2026, direct darshan has not needed online registration, so the general queue with free darshan is always open to you.

If you want a darshan pass, book it only on the trust’s own site, shreebhimashankar.com. Several agents and apps offering Bhimashankar bookings have no approval from the trust. A pass can be worth having on a Monday or during Shravan, when the general line is longest.

We are a cab service, so we cannot book a pass for you or get you through the queue faster. That part stays between you and the trust.

How long the darshan line takes

On an ordinary day, the line alone can take about two hours. On Mondays, through Shravan and at Mahashivratri, the waiting can run to several hours. These are the peak days for darshan of Lord Shiva at the sixth Jyotirlinga, and the whole hill is crowded with devotees.

Because the wait is hard to predict, our day trip keeps four full hours at the temple. If the line moves quickly, there is time for the walk to Hanuman Lake or Gupt Bhimashankar, or simply to sit among the trees. The temple stands inside a declared wildlife sanctuary.

The 200 steps

This is the part elderly yatris and their families should think about most. The temple sits below road level. From the parking, it is about 200 steps down to the sanctum, then the same climb back up. There is no lift, and vehicles cannot go any nearer.

  • Doli (palanquin) carriers are sometimes found at the top. They cannot be booked ahead, so do not count on one.
  • In the monsoon the steps become slippery. Good footwear matters more here than at most temples.
  • Anyone with knee trouble, a heart condition or difficulty breathing should think this through honestly. They can wait at the top while the rest of the group goes down.

Dress, weather and photography

  • Dress: modest clothing, with covered shoulders and full-length clothes for the sanctum.
  • Weather: Bhimashankar is high in the Sahyadri, and mornings are cold and misty for much of the year. Carry a warm layer even in summer.
  • Photography: not permitted of the garbhagriha or the Jyotirlinga. The outer temple and the forest around it are fine.

Best time to visit

October to February is the most comfortable stretch, especially if anyone in your group finds steps hard. The monsoon brings out the forest and waterfalls, but the steps are slippery and the ghat road is slower. On any day, early morning is the easiest time for darshan.

Getting there from Pune

The temple is about 110 km from Pune, around three hours each way by road, with a ghat climb at the end. A round trip is about 220 km. That makes Bhimashankar the one Jyotirlinga in Maharashtra that works as a day trip from Pune.

Our Bhimashankar tour package from Pune picks you up at home at 5:30 AM, keeps four hours at the temple and has you back in Pune at about 4:30 PM. If you want to add a second Jyotirlinga, the 2-day Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar and Shirdi package starts the same way and goes on to Trimbakeshwar and Shri Sai Baba’s samadhi mandir at Shirdi.

Whichever you choose, make that call to the trust first.
